Black Brunch Brigade

Coming from Shreveport,  brunch was rarely a “ting“.  Maybe it was because I was fresh out of college and working long hours or maybe I missed the memo, but once I moved to the Dallas Fort-Worth area, I soon found out that I’m not living if I’m not brunching.

By definition, “Brunch is a combination of breakfast and lunch eaten usually during the late morning, but it can extend to as late as 3pm.”  Favorites like chicken & waffles, pancakes, shrimp & grits, breakfast potatoes,  and fruit are available in many places.  The food is all fine and dandy, but the real champion of brunch is mimosas.  Champagne and fresh juices should not be taken lightly, because they can sneak up on you.  Brunch is at the perfect time for those who slept in on the weekend or even those who were up early.

What I really like about brunch though, is that it can be and most of the time is a highly social event.  Most people wind down after a long week at work and enjoy their afternoon with friends enjoying drinks and food together.  It’s kind of like a weekend meeting where you catch up with people, make plans, make new friends, and just enjoy laughs together.  Being new to a city, one may not know what places to go or have people to go with to brunch.  Well a friend  in brunch thought of a solution to this.  The Black Brunch Brigade was created by Ally and Brittany.  Through the powers of GroupMe and social media, they gathered together a bunch of brunch eating young men and women to indulge in all things Black AF and Brunch AF.  What sparked the minds behind BBB, I asked Ally herself what was the reason for the creation.

Black Brunch Brigade was designed to bring black folks together to participate in two of our favorite pastimes, drinking and enjoying good company. Black Brunch Brigade provides the atmosphere to do both without the hassle of having to plan, organize, and fret over the minor details like arguing about where to go or calling to make reservations. You just show up to the place at the time allocated in the details. That’s it.”
“Our goal is to provide the same experience on a national level. So if you’re visiting a city and you don’t know where the best brunch spots are, you’ll have a network anywhere that will give suggestions and possibly meet up with you for a mimosa. When we see pictures or hear folks say “hey me and such and such just met up at the best brunch spot in town and everyone should visit” or when we see folks organizing big brunch outings in the name of Black Brunch Brigade, we’ll know that we’ve achieved our purpose.”

“What I love most about brunch is that it forces you to explore. I’m always looking for the best spot with the best food at the best mimosa prices. If I hear about a new brunch spot that has cheap drink prices and good food, I’m going to travel to try it. But more importantly, I’m going to force folks to go with me and try something new as well. The best experience aren’t always in your backyard.  Sometimes they’re in someone else’s.”

As I have attended some of these brunch events, I can truly say it is serving its purpose.  I’ve met new friends just for showing up to the designated restaurant.  People always say I need to get out the house more, well food and alcohol is a great way to get me out, as well as beautiful people.  Mimosa’s are the segue to new friendships!  My close friend and his fiancé were in town and attended the latest event and it left a lasting impression on them as well.  Coming from the same city as me, the atmosphere of young professionals gathering in one place was a win for them in their trip as well as their decision to move to the area.

In closing, The Black Brunch Brigade I feel  is something needed in todays time.  With the stressors of the work week and the headaches of society, good food, good drank, and good people, are needed to rejuvenate ones spirit.  Providing information and locations in the DFW area while also coordinating events to network and bring people together is where Black Brunch Brigade shines.  So next time you are in town, hit BBB up and enjoy a beautiful Dallas afternoon with good people, good food and most importantly, good mimosas!
